Houdini and the Crazymaker

A comedy drama with elements of caper, escape, road trip, friendship, and dementia.

Inspiration

Both our mothers passed away with dementia. In our conversations, we found ourselves laughing hysterically at the outrageous things they said and did and quickly realised that while the specifics might change, millions of people around the world are going through the same thing. Dementia affects 1 in 2 people, and it has been shown that humour is essential for those dealing with it. We both experienced the sheer relief at being able to laugh with our mothers about absurdities when things got hard.

There are many films about the devastating effects of dementia and about the difficulties of old age. Instead, this will be a funny and heart-warming film that is part caper, part escape road trip and ultimately about friendship.

The inspiration for this film comes from the conversations, hallucinations and actions our mothers took during those declining years. We have asked ourselves “What if?” – what if they did escape, what if they did venture home or to the seaside, what if they did drive again (illegally) and what if they did become friends?

This family-friendly film will appeal to a 45+ age range, with the caper elements attracting a more general audience. Style comparisons are The Great Escaper, Quartet and The Love Punch. Dementia as a theme is international, the challenge will be making the comedy translate. Dementia won’t be mentioned in the film, but those viewers who are living with it will recognise the signs and it will give them the opportunity to see it differently.
